Taking the CMA Exam in 2022? Here’s Your Roadmap

On the fence about taking the CMA exam in 2022?

I understand more than you could conceivably imagine. When I was judging about taking the CMA exam I procrastinated a great time.

The fact is, I almost talked myself out of it several times until I discovered the only thing holding me back was anxiety and the sense of overwhelm I was experiencing about qualifying for the exam.

I’m going, to be frank with you: the road to becoming a CMA requires plenty of time, effort, and determination, but it is absolutely achievable.

I am living evidence of that.

And to support you join the elite (and ever-growing!) population of individuals with their CMA certification, I am breaking down my roadmap to CMA victory.

Step 1: Understanding How to Become a CMA

Uncertain of what exactly it entails to become a CMA?

Understanding what you’re about to take on is particularly important if you want to achieve.

There are several fundamental things you must do in order to become a CMA:

  • Gain your bachelor’s degree from an accredited University

  • Become an associate of the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA)

  • Complete 2 years of consecutive management accountant work knowledge(or 4 years of part-time consecutive employment)

  • Register and sit for both CMA Exam Part one and CMA Exam Part two.

There are stipulations to many of these conditions. For example, does your position experience qualify?

For a complete breakdown of all the CMA needs check out my comprehensive post here: Certified Management Accountant Requirements.

Step 2: Which IMA Membership Should I Pay? Student or Professional?

There are nearly 3 different types of IMA memberships open and each has an annual fee:

  • Professional – $230 annually + one-time $15 fee – for someone already in the finance/accounting field

  • Academic – $120 annually + a one-time $15 fee – for faculty associates

  • Student – $39 for one year or $78 for two years – for learners presently enrolled in college or university (recent graduates excluded)

Selection is relatively simple based on your status. Once you settle on a membership, expend your fee and that’s it. Easy!

Step #3: What Options Do I Have to Prepare for the CMA Exam?

There are several methods you can prepare for the CMA exam and if you plan on growing then choosing a CMA review course is required.

Self-study and instructor-led reexamination courses are open and choosing the right one for you will be hanging on your personal learning style and funding.

There are 3 options currently:

  • Self-study review methods

  • Live, in-class CMA prep classes

  • Instructor-led online review methods

CMA Self-Study Method

Self-study, as the name suggests, is a method of learning where you lead yourself to the CMA subject matter with the aid of a CMA exam assessment course designed for self-studying.

If you select to study on your own, take points into your own hands, and have had earlier success with this strategy in college or elsewhere, self-study may be good for you.

I highly suggest allotting 4-5 months of study time, including 25-30 hours of study per week, to assure you comprehend all the necessary material if you are going the self-study route.

Why so long?

Just put, you will not have a support system to help you with difficult concepts or help with questions. The extra time allows you time to work through problems and still come out on top.

Live, In-Class CMA Prep Course Methods

Multiple Universities, Colleges, and Institutes near the USA and the world offer CMA prep classes in a classroom setting with a live professor. We were presented with learning in this type of environment so it can be hard to change to a self-study process for example.

If this is the case, a live course may be the proper fit for you. This option is significant for candidates who require an instructor in the same room.

Yet, from personal experience, live classes are very accelerated staying between 5 to 9 weeks and completing only once per week for 4 to 6 hours per session.

Behind coaching thousands of prospects and from personal experience, the lowest time required to sufficiently prepare per part is 16 weeks, and definitely many more hours of instruction.

Live prep courses can also be expensive, going from $1,250 to $2,000 per part.

If you totally need an educator to be in the same room with you, have the time to move to/from school, and can afford the fee, then bringing a live prep course may be the right fit.

Recall that the classes are extremely accelerated. If you keep the time and can save to such a pace, this is the proper method for you.
